Tour of Britain 2013 Stage 8 (22/09/13)
So after 7 stages of cycling throughout Great Britain, from Scotland to Wales to Devon & to Surrey, the 8th & final stage of the 2013 Tour of Britain arrived in Central London.
There had been numerous stage winners, however since stage 3, the individual time trial, Sir Bradley Wiggins has held a comfortable lead that had only lost a little time in the run up to London, making him favourite to win the tour.
Again I turned up early at the stage to get a vantage point next to the start/finish line, to capture the action that would unfold throughout the day.
Below is a small selection of the images I took at the Final stage in London.
As it was in London and the fact that the stage would begin later in the day, there were a couple of support races taking place. The first in the morning was the Westminster Womens grand prix race, a 1 hour long race for female cyclists making its debut here in London. Here the riders were just being given a short briefing before the start of the race.
The winner was the pre race favourite, criterium champion Hannah Barnes, who sprinted to what turned out to be a comfortable victory.
Another of the support events was the Gentlemans time trial. 1 lap around the course that the tour cyclist would lap 10 times later on. Here Ned Boulting was amongst the first riders to complete the course.
Not long after the time trial, the rider sign ons began. After signing on, Movistar rider Alex Dowsett has a ride around part of the lap before heading back to the start area.
Being the last stage, a lot of teams lined up for photos on stage after signing on. Bernie Eisel decided to photobomb the group photo for the United Healthcare team!
Bradley Wiggins & Mark Cavendish have a chat at the start line with a few minutes before the race begins.
Angel Madrazo lines up at the start with a bit more work to do to ensure he keeps hold of two jerseys at the end of the stage.
Into the race and the familiar team sky train heads up the peloton as they chase down a five man breakaway.
Riders power towards the start/finish line during one of the 3 intermediate sprints on the stage.
Linda Wiggins, Bradley’s mum rings the bell signifying 1 lap to go meaning roughly 8km to go until he secures the 2013 tour of Britain win.
He’s done it again, Mark Cavendish lifts his arms into the air after sprinting down Whitehall to claim his 3rd tour win & 2nd in a row.
Team sky photographer Scott Mitchell & Mark Cavendish embrace in the media area after the race.
After claiming yet another stage victory, Cav doesn’t waste any time at all opening up the champagne.
Fan Favourite Angel Madrazo steps up on stage to collect the first of two jerseys after riding so well throughout the 8 stages. Unlike Cavendish though, it took a bit longer for Angel to open up the champagne.
But when he did open it, he was willing to share with everyone on stage!
Finally the main man, Sir Bradley Wiggins steps up onto stage to collect his trophy and acknowledge the crowds.
Brad was presented with another Gold Jersey for the final time as the crowds cheer him on.
Martin Elmiger who finished 2nd, also collecting the points jersey, joins Simon Yates in 3rd to have a photo taken with Winner Sir Bradley Wiggins.
